Gatsby's Home —
Art Deco, done for life

SCOPE LOCATION

Full home renovation Bluff Hill, Napier

A home that finally matched who they were — full of personality & welcoming; all while being completely functional.

——— THE SITUATION

They'd been in the house for years.
The home hadn't kept pace.

The bones were beautiful — classic Art Deco, full of character. But the kitchen was dark, cramped, and impossible to move through. They were stepping into a new chapter and wanted a home that finally felt like theirs.

——— WHAT WAS IN THE WAY

Renovate too boldly and you lose the character.
Too timidly and nothing changes.

With an Art Deco home, the line between honouring and erasing is everything. The brief was to find it — and hold it across every room, from the kitchen to the wardrobes to the bathrooms.

——— WHAT CHANGED

Rich materials chosen to sit in conversation with the house.

A soft curved island opened the kitchen up and became its heart. Deep tones, warm timber, finishes with depth rather than surface shine — chosen to honour the home's original details, not compete with them. Every room designed as part of the same whole.

——— WHAT LIFE LOOKS LIKE NOW

They move through it
without thinking about it.

Bold where it should be bold. Calm where it needs to be calm. Unmistakably Art Deco — without being precious about it. From the curved island to the wardrobes, everything speaks the same language now.

Four decisions that
made the difference

  • 01 — The island

The soft curve suited the Art Deco character and created a gathering point the original kitchen never had. It anchors the room without dominating it.

  • 02 — The materials

Deep tones, bold colours, and warm timber layered to sit alongside the home's original details — not compete with them. The house still knows what it is.

  • 03 — The whole home

Kitchen, bathrooms, wardrobes all designed together — one cohesive design making decision making easy, not a series of renovations. That's what makes it feel finished.

  • 04 — The lighting

Layered lighting that is both functional and aesthetic, elevating the space to a higher level with thoughtful and restricted use of LED lighting.
