How long does a kitchen renovation take in NZ?

Most full kitchen renovations in New Zealand take 12 to 16 weeks from first design meeting to finished space. The build stage is usually 4 to 6 weeks. The rest is design, documentation, and joinery manufacture.

Stage by stage timeline

1. Discovery and brief: 1–2 weeks

Initial call, home visit, and measure. This is where we define how you use your kitchen, who uses it, what does not work, and what must change.

2. Concept design and layout: 2–4 weeks

Layout options, storage planning, and initial selections. You see plan and elevation drawings and give feedback. Two or three rounds of refinement are normal when the brief is complex.

3. 3D renders and final design: 1–2 weeks

Once the layout is agreed, 3D visuals are created. These show you the kitchen from multiple angles with real finishes applied. You sign off knowing what you are getting before anything is ordered.

4. Documentation and quoting: 1–2 weeks

Full drawings, joinery details, and specifications are prepared for your builder and cabinetmaker. They use this information to confirm pricing and schedule the work.

5. Joinery manufacture and ordering: 4–6 weeks

Custom joinery is built to order. Benchtops, appliances, and hardware are ordered. This is the longest lead time in the process. Good planning lets this happen while you are still using your existing kitchen.

6. On site build and install: 4–6 weeks

Demolition, prep work, trades, cabinet install, benchtop templating and install, splashback, flooring, painting, and final fit off. Many families are without a full working kitchen for three to five weeks, depending on scope.

What slows kitchen timelines down

Late decisions

Every late decision pushes something else back. Benchtops cannot be templated until cabinets are installed. Splashback tiling cannot start until benchtops are in. Appliances cannot be installed until services are in the right place.

Changing the brief mid-project

Adding an island, moving plumbing, or changing key finishes once drawings and quotes are done means rework. That often adds weeks, not days.

Trade availability

Good builders, cabinetmakers, and tilers are booked in advance. In regional areas like Hawke’s Bay, this can mean a wait of 4–8 weeks if you try to lock someone in late.

Council approvals

Most kitchen renovations in existing footprints do not need building consent. If you remove structural walls or change windows and doors, you may. That can add 4–6 weeks depending on council workload.

How to keep your renovation moving

  • Get the design right on paper before you book a start date.

  • Choose your builder and cabinetmaker early and share the brief with them.

  • Make material and appliance decisions before documentation is finalised.

  • Avoid scope creep once work has started.

A clear design process at the front end is the best insurance for a smooth build.
